The College of Education was founded on June 5, 1955, when Taiwan Provincial College was reconstituted to Taiwan Provincial Normal University, with five founding departments in the fields of Education, Social Education, Physical and Hygiene Education, Home Economics Education, and Industrial Education. Currently, there is a total of seven departments, one professional college, three graduate institutes, two in-service master degree programs, and one bachelor degree program in the College of Education (including the Graduate Institute of Educational Policy and Administration and the Graduate Institute of Curriculum and Instruction), the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, the Department of Adult & Continuing Education, the Department of Health Promotion and Health Education, the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, the Department of Civic Education and Leadership, the Department of Special Education (including the Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Counseling), the School of Learning Informatics (including the Program of Learning Sciences, the Graduate Institute of Information and Computer Education, and the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies), the In-service Master program of Creativity Development, and the Inter-Disciplinary Undergraduate Program. Also, there are 3 Research Centers at the university level, 2 at the college level, and 7 at the department level.<\/span><\/p>

As one of the oldest educational institutions in Taiwan, the College of Education at NTNU is peerless in the size of its departments, the quality of its teaching faculty, and the performance of its students. As of today, the College of Education has nurtured innumerable talents. Our alumni have made outstanding achievements in many fields: as commissioners and key personnel in governmental and public administrative institutions; as university leaders or first-rate researchers in education-related fields; as educators in secondary schools in Taiwan; and in civilian careers in cultural industries. Our alumni have contributed their best to improve education in Taiwan. Furthermore, the College has been devoted to scholarly research for a long time. Among the five TSSCI journals the College has been running, four are proudly included in the Scopus database with honorable academic prestige at home and worldwide. According to the 2023 US News and World Report on world university rankings, NTNU was ranked 9th in the field of education discipline in the world, not only ranked first in Taiwan but also leaping to the top of Asia\u2019s normal universities.<\/span><\/p>

The College\u2019s primary missions include, but are not limited to, disseminating visionary educational reform concepts and administrative knowledge, advocating civic and character education, promoting health, family, and early childhood development education, developing e-learning environments and distance learning platforms and integrating lifelong learning content and special education literacy. Equally important, the College simultaneously promotes the multi-elemental development of interdisciplinary learning among students. In the face of the challenges of ever-changing technology and the economy in the 21st century, we are witnessing constant transformations in the educational systems and learning methods. There is an urgent need for in-service educators to redefine the role and function of education in the new era. Therefore, it is the College of Education’s mission to develop forward-looking educational research, cultivate high-quality educators as well as researchers, and improve the quality of education in Taiwan. We are devoted to achieving the following visions:<\/span><\/p>

A. Add Values to Students\u2019 Learning Effectiveness and Sharpen Their Leadership Skills<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

To prepare our students for the roles of active members of civil society and competitive candidates for the job market, we expect our students to have integrity, a sense of responsibility, teamwork skills, and a willingness to help others improve, in addition to the development of professional knowledge. In the future, our integrated curriculum will provide students with more opportunities for practical work and teamwork, sharpen their leadership skills, and strengthen work ethics for employment and lifelong learning.<\/span><\/p>

B. Translational results enhancing social participation and impact<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Educational research must benefit society to manifest its service function. In this vein, the College of Education leads the scholarship on seminal educational issues and policies, provides solutions, and elevates our influence on and service to society. In addition, we encourage students to be aware of social agendas, develop their critical thinking and analytical skills, and learn to solve complex problems.<\/span><\/p>

C. Upgrading the Teaching Model to Cope with Technological Changes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The creation and flow of knowledge are no longer exclusively managed by a few groups of people or institutions as the learning platform\/media has become more innovative. Through inter-departmental dialogue platforms, the College will establish a learning community, improve the faculty’s instructional and assessment methods, and work with the Center of Teaching and Learning Development to establish teaching assistant training for graduate students to create a supportive learning environment and enhance learning effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>

D. Breaking Academic Boundaries and Barriers, and Promoting Mobility and Competitiveness<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

As social issues become increasingly sophisticated, an interdisciplinary and international approach will be useful in providing multicultural perspectives and methods to solve complex social problems that help to widen the horizon. The College will continue to develop more interdepartmental programs and joint courses to promote interdisciplinary cooperation that offers more exchange opportunities to teachers and students.
